STOP THE 'DON'T SAY GAY' BILL
The world is changing rapidly and, in some ways, we are going back. Florida, in March of 2022, started an anti-gay campaign in schools across America to stop the conversation about self-exploration, identity, and more by passing the bill commonly referred to as the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ Bill. This bill claims to be an anti-groomer bill by the right wing and Ron DeSantis; however, this is a much more complex issue on LGBT+ youth.
The primary issue with preventing conversations in school about same sex relationships (in a context that proves to be academic and informative, not sexual) is that this erases people who identify as LGBT+. Children who have same sex parents may be unable to speak about their home life simply for the fact it is two people of the same sex, with no other motivator. The other factor on the dangers of this bill is that this disables young LGBT+ people. There is no privacy permitted to a student who may be questioning or exploring their identities as any knowledge that is gain by the teacher must be shared with the adult within a 6-week time period or there could be legal actions. LGBT youth is a massive demographic to the homelessness crisis in America and it is because these children are exposed to their parents who can throw them out and abandon their children with no legal ramifications.
This website aims to inform people that this bill is inherently wrong and cruel, vastly broad, and unnecessary. This site also provides links to information and links to, if one were compelled to, help support removing this bill and supporting organizations that help LGBT+ people.
